What does it mean to build a home when every road, every tree, and every tomorrow feels uncertain?
Esther and Junior, a Haitian couple traveling north with Esther’s daughters, Flor and Aisha, find temporary refuge in a remote forest in central Mexico. There, beneath the path of migrating Monarch butterflies, they create a fragile world of tenderness, play, and possibility. But as illegal logging closes in and the weight of Junior’s past begins to surface, Esther must hold the family together while the forest around them is slowly torn apart.
Because even in a disappearing forest… love will always search for a place to take root.

Esther y Junior, una pareja haitiana que viaja hacia el norte con Flor y Aisha, las hijas de Esther, encuentran un refugio temporal en un bosque remoto del centro de México. Allí, bajo la ruta migratoria de las mariposas monarca, crean un frágil mundo de ternura, juegos y esperanza. Pero mientras la tala ilegal avanza y el peso del pasado de Junior comienza a salir a la superficie, Esther deberá mantener unida a su familia al mismo tiempo que el bosque a su alrededor desaparece poco a poco.
Porque incluso en un bosque que se desvanece… el amor siempre buscará un lugar donde echar raíces.

Born in Mexico City in 1986, Joaquín del Paso is a Mexican filmmaker whose work offers incisive portraits of social hierarchies and the systems that shape everyday life. He trained at EICTV in Cuba and the Polish National Film School in Łódź.
His debut feature, Panamerican Machinery, premiered at the Berlinale in 2016 and earned him the Ariel Award for Best Original Screenplay. His second feature, The Hole in the Fence, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2021, receiving the Bisato d’Oro and later winning Best Feature at the Cairo International Film Festival. As a producer, his credits include the Silver Bear winner Robe of Gems and the Locarno award winners Love Dog and Sermon to the Fish.
With The Garden We Dreamed, del Paso turns toward a more intimate and human form of storytelling, intertwining two migrations; the journey of a Haitian family traveling north and the flight of Monarch butterflies returning south, to explore displacement, environmental loss, and the stubborn persistence of hope.
Nacido en la Ciudad de México en 1986, Joaquín del Paso es un cineasta mexicano cuya obra ofrece retratos incisivos de las jerarquías sociales y de los sistemas que moldean la vida cotidiana. Se formó en la EICTV de Cuba y en la Escuela Nacional de Cine de Łódź, Polonia.
Su ópera prima, Maquinaria Panamericana, se estrenó en la Berlinale en 2016 y le valió el Premio Ariel a Mejor Guion Original. Su segundo largometraje, El hoyo en la cerca, se presentó en el Festival de Venecia en 2021, donde recibió el Bisato d’Oro, y posteriormente ganó el premio a Mejor Largometraje en el Festival Internacional de Cine de El Cairo. Como productor, sus créditos incluyen Robe of Gems, ganadora del Oso de Plata, y las premiadas en Locarno Love Dog y Sermon to the Fish.
Con El jardín que soñamos, del Paso se acerca a una narrativa más íntima y humana, entrelazando dos migraciones; el viaje hacia el norte de una familia haitiana y el vuelo hacia el sur de las mariposas monarca, para explorar el desplazamiento, la pérdida ambiental y la persistencia obstinada de la esperanza.
