Jardines Del Bosque

The summer of 2014 survives in fragments: bicycle rides, cheap cameras, crude jokes, and the face of a girl no one could forget.

In Jardines del Bosque, an ordinary middle-class neighborhood in Guadalajara, Santos, Lechuga, and Daniela spend their preteen days feeding an obsession with mysteries and true crime. Then Arlette moves into the house across the street. Older, magnetic, and seemingly fearless, she becomes the center of their attention and, for Santos, the beginning of something that feels a lot like love.

When Arlette disappears and the adults around them seem strangely willing to move on, the three friends decide to investigate. Armed with her abandoned tablet, a video camera, and the absolute confidence of children who believe every mystery must have an answer, they begin reconstructing her private world piece by piece. Their innocent detective game soon leads them toward a reality they are not prepared to understand.

Written and directed by brothers Alex and Diego Barragán, Jardines del Bosque unfolds through adult recollections and shifting camera formats, giving the film the texture of a memory replayed too many times. Joy, awkwardness, humor, and dread occupy the same sunlit streets as the filmmakers trace the moment when childhood’s trick is revealed and the world becomes more frightening than any story about monsters.

En Jardines del Bosque, una colonia de clase media como tantas otras en Guadalajara, Santos, Lechuga y Daniela pasan sus días de preadolescentes alimentando una obsesión por los misterios y el crimen real. Entonces Arlette se muda a la casa de enfrente. Mayor que ellos, magnética y aparentemente intrépida, pronto se convierte en el centro de su atención y, para Santos, en el inicio de algo que se parece mucho al amor.

Cuando Arlette desaparece y los adultos a su alrededor parecen extrañamente dispuestos a seguir adelante, los tres amigos deciden investigar. Armados con la tablet que ella dejó atrás, una cámara de video y la confianza absoluta de quien todavía cree que todo misterio debe tener una respuesta, comienzan a reconstruir su mundo privado pieza por pieza. Su inocente juego de detectives pronto los conduce hacia una realidad que aún no están preparados para comprender.

Escrita y dirigida por los hermanos Alex y Diego Barragán, Jardines del Bosque se construye a través de recuerdos adultos y distintos formatos de cámara, dándole a la película la textura de una memoria reproducida demasiadas veces. La alegría, la torpeza, el humor y el miedo comparten las mismas calles soleadas mientras los directores retratan ese instante en que se revela el truco de la infancia y el mundo se vuelve más aterrador que cualquier historia de monstruos.
